Memphis, Tennessee – Fifth seed Ashley Harkleroad came a cropper in her second round match on Wednesday, losing in straight sets at the Kroger St. Jude and Cellular.
The American was undone 7-5, 7-6 (3) by the tough Argentine Gisela Dulko on Grandstand Court.
Harkleroad has now lost three of her last four matches since reaching the final of the ASB Bank Classic in New Zealand back in January.
But third seeded Maria Sharapova gained an easy entry into the quarterfinals, needing only to play three games to progress.
The Russian led compatriot Tatiana Panova 2-1 when her opponent was forced to quit the match with an upper respiratory illness.
Sharapova advances to a quarterfinal match against sixth seeded American Amy Frazier.
Second seed Lisa Raymond eased past qualifier Galina Voskoboeva, 6-2, 6-3; Lindsay Lee-Waters defeated Martina Sucha, 6-3, 6-3; Fourth seeded Laura Granville battled past Maria Emilia Salerni, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
