Jankovic beats Mirza to Dubai quarters By: Ricky Punter Date: February 27, 2008, 3:36pm
Jelena Jankovic continued her unbeaten record against Sania Mirza on Wednesday. But the fourth seed was pushed all the way by India's most promising tennis talent in years.
The Serb took two and a quarter hours to secure her place in the quarterfinals of the $1,500,000 Dubai Tennis Championships.
Jankovic rallied from a set down to beat Mirza 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a titanic battle.
Mirza was roared on by a strong Indian contingent in Dubai and she rarely disappointed. The stadium was rocking when she closed out the first set, and she gave her supporters every encouragement in the latter two sets too playing some exceptional tennis.
But Jankovic just had the more potent weapons and composure through the key points of the match and was able to close out the win.
Chakvetadze Means Danger
Jankovic advances to a match against the sixth seeded Anna Chakvetadze in the last eight on Thursday.
In her match today, Chakvetadze needed three sets to see off Russian compatriot Dinara Safina 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-3.
Chakvetadze has an excellent record in matches against Jankovic. She's won six from eight of the previous battles against the Serbian – and has never lost to her on a hard court.
