Sania Mirza had a minor glitch in the second set but she was able to upright her game as she crossed the first hurdle of the US open beating Kaia Kanepi to enter the second round at the Flushin Meadows, New York.
Sania Mirza had to overcome the lapse in concentation as she beat the 44th ranked Estonian 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-1 in the first round of the US open. The 26th Hyderabadi began her campaign off very well as she won the first set conceding jsut two games. Just when it looked like Sania will run through the match Kanepi started putting pressure on the Indain and though Sania was able to take it to the tiebreaker, She lost the set as Kanepi played the important points well to force the match into the decider.
Sania, who has had a tremendous run at the US hardcourt season, showed why she is one of the hottest player around as she started the third set in aggressive fashion. She played positively and it paid off as she broke Kanepi twice in succession to race to 5-0 lead in double quick time. Sania's serve was especially on fire in the third set as she served eight aces in the match. Kanepi did her cause no good as she committed lots of UEs to help the 27th ranked Indian. Though Sania failed to bagel Kanepi, she was able to close out the match confidently in the seventh game of the final set winning it 6-1.
Sania Mirza will now take on 60th ranked Laura Granville in the second round, after the American routed Frenchwoman Olivia Sanchez 6-2, 6-2.
